Boo needs your help!
Boo's Story.... Just a tiny baby when his hind leg was broken, Boo did not receive any medical attention by the well known pet store chain who instead just offered him for sale "as is" without any regard for the pain this poor little guy was in. Safe Haven received a call on June 9th, 2010 from a woman who had bought Boo and wanted to get him some help. While she knew he needed medical attention, she somehow did not realize it was the pet store's responsibility! Listening to the story, I shuddered at some of her words in defense of the pet store. "You know how it is" she remarked, "when the babies are shipped in the box, some of them get injured" (or die); once in the store "they just put all the little tiny ones in with the bigger ones, and sometimes the little ones get stepped on". (or mishandled and dropped!). "That is what they do".
With my blood pressure rising, I tried to explain to her that this cruelty must be reported to the proper authorities to help stop it from happening again. But, unfortunately, even though she promised to follow through, I knew she would not. My intention then turned to just getting this baby from her since she was not able or willing to provide veterinarian care. Thankfully, she did agree to bring him to one of our veterinarians and to relinquish him to me. So, on June 12th, 2010, Boo finally was able to get much needed care.
Much younger than the '10 weeks' the pet store claimed, this baby was just barely 7 weeks old, if that, and he had been at the pet store a few weeks, making him only 4 or 5 weeks old when "shipped"....too young to be taken from his Momma. His broken leg had an obvious sore which indicated that the bone had come through; did they not see that? and his ears were infested with mites, also not treated......that is what they do. Due to his very young age and weight of only 1.2 lbs., our veterinarian did not considered him to be a good candidate for surgery until he matured some, gained weight and was healthy enough. And, now, two months later, he is! The leg, while it does not seem painful for him (he has been on pain meds) is useless except for a little support. The recommendation is that amputation will give him the best results and so he has been scheduled for surgery on August 26th.
Boo thanks you for your generous donations and well wishes! UPDATE!!! August 27th: We are very happy to report that Boo's surgery was very successful and he is doing very well. Boo came home the day following surgery and very quickly got back to the business of being a bunny! He has a little wiggle in his hop as he learns to rebalance himself. And he will stay on pain management and antibiotics to ensure a smooth recovery. But check out his YouTube video to see for yourself! December 1st 2010: Ok, so once in a while you have to 'keep just one ,,,,' and since Boo became so very special to me I have officially adopted him! Boo is now full grown and turned out to be a pretty big boy! I am thrilled to report he is happy, healthy and getting into trouble like all bunnies do. His leg is well healed and he gets around just fine. I promise more pictures when time allows Best Regards, Karen A.
