Dusty Hay? Tips to help....

Timothy hay is an essential part of a rabbit's diet, providing the necessary fiber to keep their digestive system healthy. However, one common issue that many rabbit owners face is the dust that comes with it. Dusty hay can cause respiratory issues for both you and your rabbit. Here are a few tips to help you remove dust from the hay and how to store it to to ensure a healthier environment for your furry friend.

First Tip: Sift it!

The simplest method to remove dust from timothy hay is to sift it. Here's how you can do it.

You just need four items.  Pictures first should help (click to expand):

  1. Remember the fluorescent light fixtures?  Well, luckily, they still sell the grates that went on them and they make an excellent sifter for hay!  You can find them at home improvement stores.  They are called “Suspended Egg Crate Light Ceiling Panels”.

  2. A box to go under the panel to collect the hay dust.

  3. A second box for the sifted clean hay!

  4. And, of course, the hay you want to sift.

You'll want to do your sifting outside or in a well ventilated area if doing a large amount..

The ceiling panels are 2 ft x 4 ft.  Should you need to cut it to a more manageable size, that is simple to do:

Store Hay Properly

Proper storage of timothy hay can minimize dust accumulation over time. Keep it dry: Store hay in a cool, dry place to prevent mold and mildew. A clean, dry storage bin with a loose lid works well. Or store in large cardboard boxes.

Invest in High-Quality Hay

Not all hay is created equal. Higher quality hay tends to be less dusty.

  • Online purchases: Purchase hay from reputable brands. With RHDV2 concerns, it is important to know if the seller is storing the hay a minimum of 4 months prior to shipping to customers. They will post that on their website if they do.

  • Inspect when buying bales: If buying bales from local farmers, ask when it was cut and baled and inspect the hay to ensure it looks fresh and green with minimal dust. You will want to store it for 4 months from the baled date prior to feeding.

Set up your rabbit's feeding area to minimize dust spread.

Vacuum Regularly: Keep the area around the hay clean by vacuuming regularly. This helps to remove any dust that settles around their pens and feeding area.

Use Air Purifiers

Investing in an air purifier can help reduce the amount of dust in the air. Choose an air purifier with a HEPA filter, which is effective at trapping dust particles. Place it near your rabbit's enclosure for the best results.

Conclusion

Keeping your rabbit's timothy hay dust-free is crucial for their respiratory health and overall well-being. By implementing these tips, you can significantly reduce the dust and create a cleaner, healthier environment for your rabbit. Always monitor your rabbit for any signs of respiratory distress and consult a veterinarian if you notice any issues.
